Statement of intent - Both themes

Theme 1 - Nature

Intentions/purpose of the photography to be undertaken

I intend to base my first theme on Nature. Throughout this theme I will be focusing on trees, plants and water to really capture the world at its most beautiful and most natural state.
I will be carrying out some research before hand on where I will be taking my photographs and start to prepare and think about the shots I will be taking at each location.

Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)

The reason why I have chosen Nature is because I love the outdoors and showing off natural beauty in photographs and nature has an air of innocence and simplicity that I want to capture.
The research I have carried out so far has really shown me that there are no limits to working on location, such as the effects of natural light and seeing the shadows that can be created and I want to really experiment in the contrasts between photographs taken in the day time and night time. I have done research on a photographer called Tony Howell whose work I really admire. I like how he has experimented in the use of light, shadows and angles and this has inspired me to create my own shots using similar methods and techniques.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why

Sony DSC-S930 Cyber-shot
10.1 mega pixels
Steady Shot
Face detection
Optical 3x
f = 6.4 - 19.2mm  1:2.9-5.4

This is my own personal camera which I have used for shots similar to what I intend to take during this theme.
However, I have been having problems with the screen so I cannot see what I am taking a photograph of and neither can I view them. Therefore, I will either need to get it fixed or borrow a camera from the college to ensure I can complete the assignment.

Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message

Throughout this theme I wish to create photographs that are very natural, calming and peaceful and I want to make whoever views my photographs feel the same way as I do when I think about nature.
I will be experimenting with long distance shots and close up shots, use of natural light, shadows, shutter speed, flash, no flash, aperture, angles and also comparing shots taken in the day to shots taken at night.
Hopefully combining some or all of these elements together it will create those beautiful natural shots I am after.

How light quality can be used to help convey the visual message

Light quality is very important when thinking about the kind of shots I will be taking. I will need to consider the time of day and time of night for when I am taking the shots. Early mornings and late afternoons will give more of a calming and serene feel with the light being in-direct and weaker, whereas the mid-day sun will give more of a 'hard' look to the photograph with it being a more direct sunlight which will create more defined shadows. I will need to think about the light direction and strength of the light as well and may consider using other forms of lighting to create those different effects.

All of the above will create a different feel and emotion to my shots so I will be taking alot of shots to compare to ensure I can create that effect I want to convey in my theme.

Safety considerations

I will be aware of my surroundings when out taking my photographs on location and also take into account the weather conditions. I will prepare for each shoot in advance and make sure that if in hot weather I keep myself hydrated and always tell someone where I am going just in case of emergencies.

Theme 2 - Fashion on location

Intentions/purpose of the photography to be undertaken

For my second theme I will be focusing on fashion on location. The purpose is to capture fashion shots in a variety of locations to create different looks to the photographs. Once I have taken my images I will be breaking them down individually and explaining what has not worked and what has worked and I will compare my images against research I will carry out on fashion photographers.
Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)

The reason why I have chosen this theme is purely because I have always been interested in fashion and admire how fashion photographers work and how they create stories to sell the fashion in the photographs. I really like edgier shots and find it interesting how the fashion affects the location chosen and the theme of the image. America's next top model and the British version are good to watch as it shows how the photographers work with the models, the fashion and the location to create beautiful images depending on the requirements of the clients.

Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message

Throughout my second theme I will be using the camera on a manual setting and I will be experimenting with long distance shots and close up shots, depth of field, use of natural light, shadows, shutter speed, flash, no flash, aperture, angles and ISO.
Using these techniques it will help me create different looks to the images of which I will be able to compare. This will depend on where the shoot will take place and what light is available at the time.
How light quality can be used to help convey the visual message

With it being fashion on location it will mainly be natural light I will be using but I can look at the differences of outcome by experimenting with direct and in-direct light and showing use of shadows and highlighting to give different effects in the image. I may wish to shoot at night, for example in a rural setting with street lights as the main source of lighting which will look different to images taken in the day in a park or field. I will still need to take into account the time of day or night depending on what 'look' or 'feel' I am aiming to achieve as this will affect the shadows created and the strength of the daylight.

Safety considerations

This will be the same as theme 1.
I will be aware of my surroundings when out taking my photographs on location and also take into account the weather conditions. I will prepare for each shoot in advance and make sure that if in hot weather I keep myself hydrated and always tell someone where I am going just in case of emergencies.
