Research - Fashion on Location

David Burton

David Burton is another great photographer that I came across when researching fasion on location. The first three photos are very natural and relaxed which is what I love but are also moody. I also like the background he has chosen for each one.

The next set of photos give a different feel to the above. They are bright and really catch your attention and are more fun. I like that he has used blocks of colour and somehow the clothes make me think of Graffiti so the background and the clothes really compliment each other.

It really does show how you can create a different effect and feel of a photo by changing the location and clothes.

David Burton also experiments with black and white photos like the ones shown below.

These black and white photos are beautiful and serene. I especially like the middle photograph because it is almost like the road is framing the model and even though you look at the background my eyes are drawn to the model.

A photographer has alot to think about, not only must they make the photos look good but they have to shoot it in such a way that it is going to sell the fashion in the photograph.

The next set of photographs were shot in La Campagne and I like how the photographer as encorported bikes into the photo and has shot them moving instead of just posing in one place.

This photographer clearly shows his versatility in knowing how to portray different moods and mixing that together with the fashion.

Below are photos that the photographer has shot in rain in a more rural setting.

In these photographs he has used pops of colour against the rural background to really show off the fashion. Experimemting with weather and shooting the photos in rain just shows there are no limits and it adds another dimension to the photos.

The last two photographs show how David has used light and shadows in the shoot.

They are both set in contrasting locations but it shows how the shadowing and lighting can highlight the clothes.

I have loved researching David Burton as he has made me realise that its not all about location when it comes to shooting fashion on location and that the clothes and 'theme' of the photograph has alot to do with which location is chosen.
It all has to gel together to tell a story.

Research - Fashion on Location

I have always been interested in Fashion photography and like seeing soft fabrics against a more of an edgy rural background, but then I also admire the softer combination of Fashion with Nature. I have always watched Amerca's next top model and Britains next top model and the fashion on location shoots have always been my favourite so this is where I wanted to focus the next part of my research.

Sue Westwood - Ruttledge

When carrying out research on this part of photography I came across a gallery of photos taken by Sue Westwood - Ruttledge.
I like how the photos are playful, feminine and romantic and they are all on location.

Sue's work comes across very natural and effortless and I like that about the photographs. I like that she has also used props in the images to give more character to the overall shots. It also makes the images seem more fun and quirky.

I like how nature is brought into the photographs as it gives the images balance and the clothes also reflect the backdrop used. For the image above for example, the dress is flowery and neutral which goes well with the tones and textures of the grass.
Sue shows a different side to her photography in the below photograph.

I like the use of black and white in this photograph and it feels more edgy and is in more of a rural setting.

Looking at Sue's work it makes me want to experiment with a more edgy background and maybe try some shots myself in more built up areas and then to compare this to photographs I take in a more natual setting.

Research on Nature in Photography

Tony Howell

When researching nature in photography I came across an English landscape photographer Tony Howell who has had 30 years experience in the business.
After looking through his work I get a sense of peace and calmness from the way he shoots and the beauty of nature really shines through.

This beauty is something I would really like to capture in my photographs.

I love the way the light shines through the trees in the photograph below and the way its casts the shadows on the field.

I would like to use natural light in a similar way in my photographs and also take some shots of the sky but still have the trees showing (like the photo below). This adds depth to the photo.

After seeing how Tony used light in his photographs I then went on to research how he shoots photos of nature at night. Below are some of my favourite shots which gives a different feel completely to the photos shot in the daylight. This is something that I would like to experiment with and take inspiration from.

What really stands out for me in Tony's images is his use of angles and camera positioning. This is something that I would like to take inspiration from in my own photographs.

My First Assigment

After looking at the City & Guilds Handbook and the qualification structure I feel that the below unit will suit me best.

7512-92 Level 2 Certificate in Specialist Photography and Presentation
90 GLH 13 credits
Mandatory units
Unit 211 Photo image presentation 30 5
Optional units: one from 207-208
Unit 207 Principles of studio photography 60 8
Unit 208 Principles of location photography 60 8

I am very interested in the Studio side of Photography, especially where Fashion is concerned, however I haven't had any experience in this area and feel that before moving onto this I need to gain more experience and feel more comfortable with the camera and lighting. All of which I am sure will come with time throughout the course.
Therefore, because of this reason and also due to the fact that I have had more experience taking photographs outside in natural light this is the direction I would like to go down for my first assignment.

With this in mind I have thought of ways how I could encorporate Fashion and Nature together, which are probably two of my many favourite areas in Photography. This is where I will focus my research and gain inspiration.
I am looking forward to getting started and learning more!
